HowZone Frequently Asked Questions
How is HowZone different?
Most online learning is built around a one-to-many teacher-to-student structure. Our approach is fundamentally different. HowZone has a many-to-many structure honoring the fact that everyone has knowledge to share.
That's the key to HowZone Learning Communities™
How does that HowZone many-to-many structure work?
HowZone offers a collaborative environment where people connect to share knowledge and help each other learn.
What's the difference between a course and a HowZone Learning Community?
Courses are more limited. A HowZone Learning Community unites people around a topic of shared interest where they help each other build expertise as long as they want to continue growing.
With HowZone, experts continue to learn by teaching others and sharing tips and tricks with other experts. Also, a HowZone Community contains a comprehensive set of training materials created by the members of the community. These training materials are presented in a specific order to maximize your learning and provide context to your Learning.
What can't I do if I don't become a member of a community?
You can do a lot but there are few things you can't do:
- You can't participate in the discussions
- You can't message community members
- You can't access training materials over 250 on the SkillScale
Join the communities you like for full access.
Can anyone share knowledge on HowZone?
Yes! We believe everyone has knowledge to share so anyone can contribute to HowZone.
How do I choose a topic suitable for a HowZone Learning Community?
Instead of "courses," HowZone offers Learning Communities which are more substantive, where even experts continue to learn as long as they want. The topic you choose should be suitable for that purpose. Ideally, it should be broad, but not so broad it feels overwhelming or too narrow which can have limited appeal. For example, "Boating" is too broad and "Choosing the right anchor" is too narrow. "Coastal Cruising" might be just right.
Why can't I see the Learning Community I suggested?
A Learning Community appears in the catalog once it has been approved by HowZone.
What's a Nascent Learning Community?
A Nascent Learning Community is new and just starting out.
Are Nascent Learning Communities limited in any way?
No. Anyone can join the community and participate just like an Active Community.
When does a Nascent Learning Community stop being nascent?
When a Nascent Learning Community reaches certain growth thresholds, it becomes an Active Learning Community.
What is a Private Learning Community?
Companies or clubs that want to collect and share knowledge privately with themselves can get a Private Learning Community from HowZone. Private Learning Communities do not appear in the catalog.
Who can contribute knowledge to a Learning Community?
Any member of the Community can contribute knowledge.
What happens when I contribute knowledge to a Learning Community?
Your contribution will become visible in the Community, you'll earn Cred and gain recognition for your contribution.
Can I modify the knowledge I contribute?
Yes. You can modify your contribution but only HowZone staff can remove it.
What if I find knowledge that is outdated?
The best thing to do is message the creator and make a suggestion. Or you can contribute an updated version then flag the old one. If you flag, make sure you explain you are flagging the item you're replacing.
What if I find knowledge that is inappropriate or of low quality?
You should flag the item. HowZone will review flagged items and may edit or remove them.
